Rebuild Your Smile with Dental Implants

Tooth loss doesn’t have the final say. Fight back with dental implants.

Are you wondering why more and more people are turning to dental implants to replace their missing teeth? One reason is because Dental-Implantimplants are truly as close as you can get to a real tooth. They both look and function just like the real thing. When you turn to our Athens, GA, periodontist Dr. F. Neal Pylant, to get dental implants here’s what you can expect.

How do dental implants work?

An implant is a small tapered post or screw (often made from titanium) that replaces the roots of your teeth. In order for an implant to replace your roots our Athens, GA, implant dentist will need to surgically place the implant into the jawbone. Implant surgery is minor and can be performed right here in our office.

Once the implant has been placed into the jawbone we will give your mouth several months to heal (anywhere from 3-6 months). During this time a naturally occurring phenomenon known as osseointegration will occur. Osseointegration is behind the success and longevity of a dental implant. Osseointegration is when the jawbone and tissue fuse together with the implant to become one. Once osseointegration occurs the implant is a permanent part of the jawbone.

Since the implant is situated within the jawbone under the gums this part will not be visible when you smile. In order to place a false tooth over the implant we will first need to place a structure know as an abutment on top of the implant. An abutment is designed to connect the implant and false tooth together. Some dental implants already have built-in abutments.

A dental lab will also create a custom dental crown, which we will then cement on top of the abutment to complete the restoration. How long the treatment process takes will depend on a number of factors including how many implants you are getting, how quickly you heal after surgery and where the implants are being placed. It can take up to one year to get your implant.
