The American Dental Association (ADA) states that experiencing any form of tooth loss could greatly affect how you eat and speak, as well as cause the adjacent teeth to shift and cause bone loss around the missing tooth/teeth. Here at F. Neal Pylant, DMD, PC, the practice of Dr. Neal Pylant in Athens, GA, we use dental implants for replacing missing teeth.
Here’s what you should know about this treatment option:
What Exactly is a Dental Implant?
The dental implant is designed to be a substitute root of the affected tooth. Made from titanium, the post is implanted into the jawbone where an abutment is either placed on, or built onto, the top of the implant. This serves as a connection to the replacement tooth. It is then topped off with a custom-fabricated crown to match and blend with the adjacent teeth.
Could Dental Implants be Used for Replacing Multiple Teeth?
This is one of the main advantages of dental implants. They can be used to replace a single tooth, reconstruct multiple teeth, or support an entire removable lower denture. For a full set of permanent top or bottom teeth, as little as four implants could, likewise, suffice.
How Long Will The Surgery Site Heal and is It Painful?
Integrating dental implants could take several months to give the bone around it time to heal properly and secure the implant in place. The procedure could involve sedating the patient so there would be little to almost no discomfort at all.
Do I Need a Specialist to Get Dental Implants?
There is a certain level of complexity involved in the implant procedure. The implant must be carefully placed to eliminate potential complications. Proper education, competence, experience, and training is required for a dentist to perform an implant procedure.
Do I Qualify for Dental Implants?
Your dentist in Athens, GA, can determine whether you are qualified for a dental implant procedure through a complete oral examination. The health and condition of your jawbone must be determined to properly evaluate if a dental implant procedure would be successful for you.

When people consider teeth replacement options, their first priority is usually how the treatment can improve their smile. One of the most sought-after and efficient options for creating a perfect smile is dental implants. Available at our practice in Athens, GA, our dentist, Dr. F. Neal Pylant, utilizes dental implants to give our patients flawless smiles. But it’s vital to note that aside from cosmetic benefits, dental implants, likewise, offer benefits to your general health.
Dental Implants Help Keep Your Other Teeth in Their Proper Position
Think of your teeth as dominoes. When they are all in their proper positions, they sit and look neat. However, once you remove one domino from its place, the other dominoes will naturally shift or fall. Similarly, this eventually happens once you have a missing tooth since the real teeth adjacent to your missing tooth won’t have the support they need to keep them in place.
Dental Implants Make Eating Easier
Because dental implants are as durable as your real teeth, you can consume a myriad of foods that will help keep your health in check. The dental implant post we utilize here in our practice at Athens, GA, is crafted from extremely durable titanium that will be implanted into your jawbone surgically to ensure a strong and secure fit.
Dental Implants Improve Bone Health
Did you know that without stimulation from real teeth, your jawbone will gradually lose its bone mass and deteriorate? But since an implant replaces your natural tooth root, it will provide the stimulation your jawbone needs and prevent bone loss.
Dental Implants Help Prevent Gum Disease
The spaces left by missing teeth might serve as a perfect place for bacteria to flourish, which, in turn, raises your risk of developing gum disease. The thing is, gum disease not only impacts your oral health, but your overall health as well. Studies have shown that gum disease can raise your risk of developing all sorts of chronic health issues like diabetes, stroke, and heart disease. Fortunately, filling gaps left by missing teeth with implants can aid in preventing gum disease and all the other health conditions associated with it.
Dental Implants Promote Self-Confidence
Dental implants will enable you to smile freely without worries that people will see your incomplete smile. Likewise, they will make speaking and, hence, socializing much easier because you won’t need to concern yourself with hiding gaps between your teeth.

Having a missing tooth can have a negative impact on several aspects of your life. Eating is often uncomfortable, keeping your teeth clean can be a challenge, and it can be difficult to smile when you feel like your teeth don't look nice. But dental implants from our periodontist Dr. F. Neal Plant serving Athens, Georgia, and the surrounding areas, can change all that. Discover some of the ways dental implants can benefit you.
Return to normal
Your teeth are meant to work together as a full set. When one is absent, the others nearby respond to the loss by shifting out of place in an attempt to "find" the missing tooth. This can lead to a chain reaction of alignment problems and more tooth loss. Dental implants stop this detrimental process by replacing an entire tooth, from root to crown.
With dental implants from our Athens periodontist, there are no conspicuous attachment wires or clips. All of the hardware associated with these restorations are completely hidden underneath your gum line. The only visible portion, the crown, is expertly crafted from porcelain to look exactly like one of your own natural teeth, down to the color, shape, and translucency. No one will know you have a tooth restoration; even you may forget from time to time!
Not just for looks
While dental implants are the most realistic and attractive restoration available today, they have much more to offer our patients. They're the most low maintenance way to replace missing teeth, requiring no removal, special cleaning products, or periodic adjustments. They can be cleaned and flossed around just like a natural tooth. With proper care, including regular checkups with your dentist, you can expect your dental implants to last for many years.

Tooth loss doesn’t have the final say. Fight back with dental implants.
Are you wondering why more and more people are turning to dental implants to replace their missing teeth? One reason is because implants are truly as close as you can get to a real tooth. They both look and function just like the real thing. When you turn to our Athens, GA, periodontist Dr. F. Neal Pylant, to get dental implants here’s what you can expect.
How do dental implants work?
An implant is a small tapered post or screw (often made from titanium) that replaces the roots of your teeth. In order for an implant to replace your roots our Athens, GA, implant dentist will need to surgically place the implant into the jawbone. Implant surgery is minor and can be performed right here in our office.
Once the implant has been placed into the jawbone we will give your mouth several months to heal (anywhere from 3-6 months). During this time a naturally occurring phenomenon known as osseointegration will occur. Osseointegration is behind the success and longevity of a dental implant. Osseointegration is when the jawbone and tissue fuse together with the implant to become one. Once osseointegration occurs the implant is a permanent part of the jawbone.
Since the implant is situated within the jawbone under the gums this part will not be visible when you smile. In order to place a false tooth over the implant we will first need to place a structure know as an abutment on top of the implant. An abutment is designed to connect the implant and false tooth together. Some dental implants already have built-in abutments.
A dental lab will also create a custom dental crown, which we will then cement on top of the abutment to complete the restoration. How long the treatment process takes will depend on a number of factors including how many implants you are getting, how quickly you heal after surgery and where the implants are being placed. It can take up to one year to get your implant.

How do dental implants work?
Dental implants work with the natural structures in your mouth to replace your missing teeth. Unlike a dental bridge or traditional denture, implants do not require the help of the other teeth to stay in place. Instead, your periodontist implants the fixtures, small titanium posts, into the jawbone itself, creating new “roots” where your missing teeth roots once were. Then, as the bone heals, it grows around the metal fixtures to form a natural anchor, holding them securely in place. After the implant sites heal, Dr. Pylant will return you to your general dentist to place permanent restorations on the implants to replace the missing teeth.
Are dental implants safe?
In use for half a century and FDA-approved, dental implants are a safe, reliable option to replace your missing teeth. Thanks to their design, they can stand alone to safely replace one, several, or even all of your teeth. Though there is a risk to any surgical procedure, no matter how small, implants have proven to be a safe, low-risk option.
Can dental implants help me?
A good candidate for dental implants is one who is in good dental and general health and can undergo an oral surgical procedure without complications. Any instances of tooth decay or gum disease in the mouth should be taken care of prior to having implants placed. Additionally, patients should have minimal bone loss in the areas of the implant to ensure there is enough bone to hold the fixture in place.
